Why Lebron should stay in Cleveland

Legacy. It is what defines us after our time on this earth has passed and new generations find their place in the world. The actions we take now will determine how we are forever viewed in the eyes of those who come after we are gone. If a choice leads to prosperity now, it will not necessarily guarantee a positive outlook at the end of the day. Of course, the idea of legacy is meaningless if you do not care for the opinion of others, and you live by your own means. Ironically, to have the courage to follow your own path throughout your life and not conform to the expectations of others, at the end of the day will offer a far greater image than living only for glory ever could. So, it can proclaimed without doubt that the most noble road to follow in life is that which you build yourself.

These are the questions that plague Lebron James, as this off-season his contract with the Cavaliers will expire. With the freedom of free-agency the king will be able to go to any team he wishes, meaning he must chose to stay in Cleveland with his loyal fanbase, or expand his brand in a larger market such as New York, Chicago or Miami. Although, he is already the biggest star in the NBA and arguably the biggest star in sports, Lebron may never reach the star status which he desires if he continues to play for the Cavs.

 Witness

For many players this would not even be a question, as the chance to become the biggest star on the planet is a once in a lifetime opportunity. However, the story of King James is much deeper than that of the average sports star, as his position in Ohio has a much deeper meaning for himself and the fans from Buckeye Country. Having been born and raised in Akron, it was evident that when Lebron's hype began in high school that he could be the hometown hero that the state of Ohio had been waiting for. It almost seems that it was destined to be, as the Cavs secured the first round pick in the 2003 NBA draft and claimed Lebron without hesitation. Since his joining, the Cavs have made the playoffs 4 years in a row (05-09) and made it to their first NBA finals. Although this may not as impressive as it is made out to be, however you must also consider the fact that the Cavaliers had not made the playoffs in 7 years before.

 You doubt the Akron Hammer?

Despite his lack of championship winnings, Lebron has certainly found individual success, as he has been the league's rookie of the year, scoring champion, MVP; also notable achievements being a 6x All-Star, and being part of the 2008 Olympics Redeem Team and winning the gold medal. Considering these achievements at his age, 25, it is clear that Lebron is far from reaching his peak, making his current predicament all the more difficult.

Where Amazing happens

Because of his success, Lebron has become a symbol of hope in a city that has not won a championship since 1964, when the Browns won an NFL Championship. This is only enhanced by James' history with the Ohio, making him a hometown hero for the entire state. Although he is loved by much of America, the fandom for Lebron is at a different level in Ohio, as he is more than an Athlete, but rather a savior who can bring honor back to Cleveland and the state of Ohio. If Lebron chooses to leave the Cavs, he will be isolating his largest fanbase and leaving many residents of his home state feeling betrayed.

It is nearly certain that Lebron will win a championship sometime in career, given his past progress in the playoffs, the only question is which team he will be on when he does. Although it will certainly be an accomplishment wherever he earns his ring, if he is able to bring a championship to Cleveland that will make the feat much more special than winning it anywhere else would be. Currently Lebron is one of the biggest icons Ohio has ever had, behind only Paul Brown, Jim Brown and Woody Hayes, however if he is able to end the 46 year drought and bring a championship to Cleveland, he will become the biggest star Ohio has ever had.

At the end of the day, Lebron will always be an icon to the people of Ohio, but if wants to become more than just a great basketball player, and help his community like never before he will stay with the Cavs. When his career is over Lebron will most likely be considered one of the best, if not the best, to ever play the game, but if he wants to truly show he is above Micheal Jordan, then he must become something that MJ never was; a hero.
