FSF: How to Fix the NBA Dunk Contest

This years NBA Dunk Contest fell far short of entertaining. The announcers were even talking about how it failed and what could be done to fix it. Now that the Dwight Howard era is over the NBA needs to either 1) Only allow NBA All-Stars in the contest so that big stars compete, or 2) Allow anyone who is affiliated with the NBA in so that we can see NBA D-League players compete.

1) I'm not saying I don't enjoy the super stardom of Shannon Brown, DeMar DeRozan, Rudy Fernandez, Jamario Moon, Gerald Green, Tyrus Thomas, Hakim Warrick, or Chris Anderson, I'd just rather see some more household names. Bring back the superstars to compete. Once they reach the highest popularity possible they become afraid of failing in the Dunk Contest. Kobe hasn't done it in years, LeBron wimped out of his promise this year, Wade has never done it. I want to see Kobe vs. Lebron vs. Wade vs. Durant. Bring back Josh Smith, Rudy Gay and Amar'e Stoudemire to see if they have any ideas left. Add Russell Westbrook, Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans or any other young upcoming superstar. Any of these players would add a new level of excitement purely because of their stardom.

The NBA could theme the contest each year. Next year do the top scorers, Lebron, Kobe, Wade, and Durant. Then do the upcoming superstars just mentioned. After that do the most athletic Power Forwards like Smith, Stoudemire, Bosh and Beasley.

2) If all these stars are too stuck up to compete then the NBA can do the next best thing: let the NBA D-Leaguers play. These guys may not have the basketball talent of NBA players but they are some of the most athletic and creative players when it comes to dunking. They should invite some of the And1 guys also. Dunking is their specialty, and if they let Vince Carter make a career out of dunking the NBA should let these players compete. It is hard to explain in words so check out these videos:
