I am writing to you from Vancouver British Columbia as a Media for eighteen-one.com covering the 2010 Olympic Games.  Actually, no I’m writing from my dorm room at BU and it’s not Boston University.  A couple of weeks ago eighteen-one called me out on their website saying that I was supposed to write an article about the NHL.  That’s that NOT how I’m going to start out.  Instead I’m going to write about how this “Great” US victory over Canada the other night was one of the largest upsets since the US beat the Soviets in 1980.  This game had great moments, when Ryan Kesler scored one the BEST empty net goals I have ever seen (and I’m not joking it was amazing, if you watched you would know), but I’m ranking this game 2nd in games being played between US and Canada THIS YEAR!  Yes you heard me, this year.  How many of you know what the World Junior Hockey Tournament is?  Probably none of you.  And that is why I am so upset that everyone is calling this the best game ever.

Why Lebron should stay in Cleveland

Legacy. It is what defines us after our time on this earth has passed and new generations find their place in the world. The actions we take now will determine how we are forever viewed in the eyes of those who come after we are gone. Raiders Ink Best Player to New Contract

Sources at from the Associated Press report that the Oakland Raiders signed Kicker Sabastian Janikowski to a new 4 year, $16 million deal today. He is guaranteed $9 million from this deal. Good to see the Raiders quickly spending money on franchise players to turn this organization around.

Manly Mondays: The Alphabet of Manliness

I know this is old news to most, but some people still have not heard of Maddox's "The Alphabet of Manliness." This  book is "so manly even the sentences don't have periods"(Dan Berman). 

The cover starts off this books manliness by depicting an overly muscular dude jump-punching a large gorilla in the face. The only way that could be updated to be more manly(since this was published in '06) is if he were kicking ManBearPig in the balls. 

Poorly done, I know. It took 2 minutes.

It's a hilarious read and I recommend picking it up.

Why was this man in the all-star game?

 Chris Kaman, otherwise known as the big goofy white guy on the Western Conference Team

Not even the most hardcore of NBA fans may know who Chris Kaman is, but he still managed to make this past sunday's all-star game as a Center for the West. Although he certainly lacks recognition, Kaman makes up for it with his stats, as he has the highest Points Per Game for Centers in the league thus far this season with 20. This of course does not mean that Kaman deserves a spot in the All-Star game though, since the event is made for the best of the best in the entire league. That being said though, Kaman does have rank #1 for Pts/Rbs/Asts in the Western Conference, though that's not nearly as impressive as it sounds considering that the West does not hold the amount of great centers that the East does. In ranking Pts/Rbs/Asts for all Centers, only 3 out of the Top 10 ranking players are from the Western Conference.

Top Thursdays: The 10 Best NBA Players of the Past 10+ Years

This is going to be a controversial list I'm sure. All Top 10's are controversial since nobody ever agrees. Hopefully this will spark some user comments and conversation. 9 through 1 after the break.

10. Chauncey Billups (Mr. Big Shot, The Guy Everyone Forgets) - People always forget to talk about Chauncey in conversations like this one. He's definitely the 2nd best point guard of the decade behind Nash. He's arguably the best overall point guard as Nash is more offensively focused. Chauncey is a fantastic defender, a top 3 point shooter, automatic from the foul line and of course incredibly clutch. He was the 2004 finals MVP and has won the Sportsmanship Award and the Citizenship Award.

Using Metric Basketball Stats to Solve Debates 1st Edition- Tracy McGrady Was better than Kobe Bryant

There are a lot of stats in basketball and most of one general flaw, they are all relative and over simplified. What metric stats do is use a formula to calculate many factors into one stat. The data metric stats use can help determine a players overall efficiency, true shooting percentage, win shares and more. For my first experiment I'm going to show that in an ideal season Tracy McGrady is better than Kobe Bryant. Of course this is in the short run and it shows that T-Mac may have more talent that Kobe or worth to his team, but it does not take into account a full career in which Kobe wins in certain categories.

The Nets Break Attendance Record

Look at that! Just look! I cannot recall a crowd that empty at a professional sports event that early in the game. The Nets and Bucks are only 3 minutes into the game and it looks like 12 people are in attendance. As I'm watching this game on TV (sadly) it is the 4th quarter and that picture does not lie. There is no one at this game. There isn't even even any Jersey trash in the stands.

The announcers are currently showing the face of rookie star Brook Lopez and it looks like his son just told him that he's going to get a sex change. The disappointment in his expression is not uncommon, according to the announcers this is the "48th time they have seen that on his face."

4 Post-Supah Bawl Thoughts

Looks like the voters were right. Over 60% of the voters picked the Norlin A'ints to fight off Hurricane Manning. I enjoyed this Super Bowl greatly. This was clearly the 2 best teams in the league (unlike last year), featured good offense and good defense, and even got away without having any terrible calls by the refs. All in all, Super Bowl 44 was good clean fun. Drew Breesus showed that he indeed is the son of God or something, and he even showed that his legacy will go on in the form of his awesome child. Although the game was great the aftermath has caused a few problems that must be addressed:

Michael Vick Was Framed

Back in July of 2007 Michael Vick was about to enter another NFL training camp for another typical NFL year. Then the news broke that Vick was indicted in a dogfighting probe. After much investigation Vick pled guilty to felony animal fighting in August. In the coming months he would then turn himself in to start his 23 month sentence. We all knew this, but what we didn't know was that he was FRAMED.

Best of the Week: Playoff Edition

With the Regular NFL season closed off, and the playoffs over with the exception of the Super Bowl it is time to go back and review some of the best games and moments from this season's playoffs.

We'll start off with the most satisfying moment of the entire season, where on the first play of the Ravens-Patriots Game in the wildcard round Ray Rice rushed over 80 yards for a touchdown. The embarrassment that the Ravens brought upon the Pats on their first drive was just the beginning of the rape that Baltimore would continue to bring upon New England throughout the game. This play will forever go down in history as the defining moment of the end of the Patriots dynasty, and for that it has quickly become one of our favirote moments in NFL history.

Why the Jets never could have won the superbowl (and why they won't for awhile)

To some the Jets recent loss to the Colts in the AFC Championship game may have come as a surprise, considering that they had already upset their way that far in the playoffs. Despite having the best defense and running game in the league the Jets could not keep up with the Manning Master. Hell even we claimed that the Jets were the AFC team to watch for an upset.  However, at the end of the day it's not that surprising for a number of reasons which we'll cover after the break:

Best of the Year of the Week of the Year Part 2: Electric Boogaloo

It was a crazy year, filled with big plays, big names and Jared Allen. There were disappointments (Cutler), surprises and Brett Favres everywhere. Here are some of our favorite plays and events from the past season.

As the Niners re-surged thanks to the help of Coach Mike Singletary, one of the players who returned back to dominance was Frank Gore. This scene particularly represents Gore's return to power, as he makes fools out of the Vikings D-Line.

Best of the Year of the Week of the Year Part 1

Throughout this NFL season we experienced a lot of things. From the good, to the bad, to the strange, here's a look through of some of the things that we learned this year in the NFL.

First playoff weekend

Jets vs bengals.

Unless the bengals come out and get a 2 score lead early to make up for last week I don't see them winning this. Palmer isn't good enough to lead the team especially if they need to come back.

Ravens vs. Pats

I like the pats here. The ravens defense isn't as good as it used to be.
Edit > I forgot to take into account that Brady sucks balls.


Eagles vs. Cowboys

Can't root for the cowboys until they break their 13 year losing streak.
Edit > Okay, maybe I can pick them to win now. Probably won't though.

Packers vs. Cardinals

The pack have been playing stout defense and have been pretty hot but I think Kurt knows how to play in the playoffs and the cards know how to be the underdog trolls.

Best of the Year Awards

MVP: Peyton Manning

There really is no other candidate which qualifies for this award more than the Manning-Master. Not only did he lead his team to a 14-2 record as both quarterback and offensive coordinator (he may not be credited for it, but we all know he's the the one calling the plays), but the only two losses that his team suffered came when he wasn't starting. If that does not convince you how essential Manning is to the Colts success this season then I don't know what else will. Just in case though i'll provide you with some of his impressive feats this season, such as having the 2nd most passing yards out of any quarterback this season(only behind Matt Schaub) with 4500. Along with that, Manning threw 33 touchdown passes and had an overall QB rating of 99.9%. Combine those stats with a near perfect season (DAMN YOU CALDWELL!), and you have yourself a perfect MVP Candidate.

Urban Meyer Leaves Florida

Reports from Florida are that Urban Meyer will step down as the head coach of the Gators citing "health reasons." Obviously it is because he no longer can fuck Tim Tebow

UPDATE: Meyer is now saying he is only going to take a year off from coaching. Of course what he's really doing is taking off the year where the team will be rebuilding and doesn't want his record tarnished, so when he comes back he will look like the hero who helped to save Flordia football. Essentially, he's a fucking douchebag who's going to trick all of College Football and get away with it.

Best of the NFL Week 14 and 15

Who called it? Who was it who claimed weeks ago that Brett Favre's time on the Vikings would result in bursting into flames and crashing? Yep, we did. Of course it's really not much of an accomplishment, since it was pretty obvious that it was bound to happen, so it's kind of like saying somebody with terminal cancer is going to die, except instead of being a tragic occurrence this is actually humorous. Unless you're a vikings fan (and if you are then you can go to hell!), then you really have no reason to like Favre. The guy tarnished his legacy and spit on all his fans from his days in Green Bay by going to a team which would hurt their chances of making the playoffs. However, don't let ESPN fool you, there is no rivalry between the Packers and Vikings. The only ones who believe that are Vikings fans, and that's only because they want to be considered as significant as the Bears and Packers, but never will since they lack the tradition, history and success that the two teams in the NFL's biggest rivalry have. Essentially what I'm saying is that Favre, Childress, the Vikings and their fans can all go to hell, as I will be laughing at them as they fail within the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Enough ranting, as it's time for a special edition of Best of the Week where I will be looking back on the past two weeks since we're behind schedule due to the holidays and finals from college. So without further or-do hit the jump for two weeks of NFL awesomeness!

Week 14 Power Rankings

I had a lot of fun watching ESPN's 3 golden boys (Favre, Brady and Romo) fail at leading their teams to comeback victories. This week just proves 3 of 18-1's beliefs: Favre is not MVP and will collapse and throw picks under pressure, Brady is NOT CLUTCH, his wins are courtesy of Awesome Adam Vinatieri field goals, and Romo will always be bad in December and the playoffs. Now I don't expect this week's best to come anywhere close to last week's batch of clips and pics, as there was no game so good that it was worth separating the section into two parts for. Honestly, the Saints and Colts look like one of them could go 16-0 as they both have pretty easy schedules coming up. Every week the NFL looks more and more like its the Saints and the Colts, then everyone else.
